Let’s give these kids the “slow clap.” A group of teenages in the U.K. developed a new idea for an old prophylactic that we can all applaud.

Musaz Nawaz, Daanyaal Ali and Chirag Shah, students at Isaac Newton Academy in London won the top prize in the Health Category at the TeenTech Awards.  The purpose of the awards challenges students to create a technology that will “make life better, simpler, or easier.”  These students decided on a condom that changes color if the person has an STI, making BOTH partners aware of it.

Contest officials said, “the idea is still a concept”, but they did state that previous winners have been patented and these condoms are expected to go to market.

14-year old Ali said, “we created the S.T.EYE as a new way to STI detection to help the future of the next generation.”

The way it works is there would be a layer of molecules inside the condom that would attach to bacteria and viruses like herpes, syphilis and chlamydia.  Any reaction would cause the condom to glow a specific color, depending on the infection.  YIKES!

We say kudos to you kids, we believe this is the type of invention the world needs and it may save the life of someone one day.
