Independent Artist Motivation – David Banner

Have you heard about The Movement? Which movement you ask; we call it the David Banner movement. Banner has decided to change the game, getting a leg up on labels and distribution companies and cutting out the middle man. Banner got on Twitter recently and asked his followers to go on to his website, davidbanner.com, and donate at least $1. In exchange, donators get to download a copy of his new album Sex, Drugs & Video Games. Banner’s goal is simple. “START CONTROLLING YOUR OWN MUSIC, MOVIES & CONTENT…PERIOD”. On www.davidbanner.com, he states:

“Hell, even if you don’t like me, at least support the movement, because that’s what this is really about…I spend a great deal of my own money on this project, so I know you can spend at least $1. Chris Brown and Lil Wayne ain’t cheap.”

Banner is going back to his roots as a starving artist, when he purchased his own CDs, burned them, and distributed them out the back of his trunk. He’s just doing it on a larger level. Taking back is independence from large conglomerates, making it is purpose to own his image, music, and distribution rights.

So, what can other artists learn from Banner’s movement? The idea of creating your own destiny is what makes Banner’s movement so important. There are so many times artists feel they need to be SIGNED to this label or that music group. Banner has invested in himself, along with user modern technology – Facebook, Twitter, etc. to create this marketing campaign for his movement. Of course, the average independent artist may not have access to 2 million fans, the concept that Banner is using and the message he is sending of how important it is to have artistic control.
