UPDATE:

The judge in the Coffee Cancer Warning case is affirming his ruling. Monday, the Judge stated that all coffee sold in California must carry a cancer warning.

Judge Elihu Berle confirmed that Starbucks and other roasters have not proven the health benefits outweighed the risks of acrylamide, a carcinogen that’s a byproduct of the roasting process. Keurig, Starbucks, Peets and around 90 other coffee companies will have to display these warnings.

Exonerated

Just within the past ten years, and with the passing of time, we’ve seen numerous cases of men being exonerated after serving decades in jails for crimes that they’ve never committed. We have seen stories like Emmett Till, who at the age of 14, was lynched because he was accused of grabbing a white woman; only to find out that Carolyn Bryant Donham lied about her account. Donham, stating in an interview that when she said,“Emmett grabbed her and was menacing and sexually crude toward her, ‘that part is not true’.Even the tragic story of George Stinney, another teenager accused of murdering 2 small girls, was sentenced to die in South Carolina and is the youngest person in America given a death sentence; 70 years later, Stinney was exonerated on these charges. Also, let’s not forget the tragic story of another incident in NY, the Central Park 5, who won a 14 year court battle and settled with the city for $41 million. These stories remain America’s dirty little secret, especially when it pertains to the unfair treatment of blacks in this country. Today, we can only add to these not-so-secret movements that aim to incarcerate people of color in this country. 26 years after their conviction, two of the men sentenced for the another Central Park rape have been exonerated due to false claims.

Back then, VanDyke Perry and Gregory Counts were only 21 and 19, and were accused of kidnapping and raping a white woman in the park in 1991. Perry and Counts have always maintained their innocence. There was no evidence that connected them to a rape, the victim had stopped cooperating with the prosecution before the trial. Prosecutors actually had to force the victim to testify. With no evidence and a questionable victim, Perry and Counts were convicted of multiple charges, including first-degree rape. Perry spent 10 years in prison and Counts spent 26 years in prison after being paroled last year.

Lies Exposed

After reaching out to the Innocence Project, testing was done on the woman’s underwear, which led investigators to a different man. However, the victim had already told officials that she would sell sex for drugs and that is where the DNA may have originated. After speaking with the woman again, she finally recanted her entire story. She let them know her boyfriend made her lie on Perry and Counts because he was under suspicion of shooting Perry. This woman faces no charges because of the statute of limitations.

Perry told The Associated Press that the woman’s lies, “really destroyed my life. I couldn’t get decent jobs, but i’m determined. I have kids, and I had to strive for them. Even when my back was hurting, and I started getting gray hair too young from working so hard, I had faith.”

There is no word yet on a civil suit that will be launched against the state of New York, the woman, and anyone else who may have participated in this unfair judgment.

Selfless Act

Ok, so this is kinda dope! We saw the headlines and watched the video. Two black men were removed from Starbucks for simply sitting inside waiting for an associate to arrive. They were not hostile, they were not bothering anyone, they simply came inside the Starbucks and sat down without ordering anything – like many of us have done. Today, they settled with the city of Philadelphia. They will receive $1.00 each and received a promise from city officials to set up a $200,000 program for young entrepreneurs.

On April 12th, as the world saw the wrongful arrest of these two men, it caused a fury across the country and revived the conversation that we have been having for decades about racial profiling. We also watched two young men who held their composure, even though they were treated unfairly and were being judged only because they were black.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson wanted something positive to come from the shameful incident. Donte Robinson stated,

“We thought long and hard about it and we feel like this is the best way to see that change that we want to see. It’s not a right-now thing that’s good for right now, but I feel like we will see the true change over time.”

Remember, this was an opportunity for these two men to gain financially if they wanted to. They could have taken a settlement, and went on to live their lives. Instead, they realized this was an opportunity to do something good and make this bigger than themselves. This was definitely a selfless gesture.

The good news is that their arrest records have been expunged, and the city of Philadelphia will have a brand new entrepreneurship program for public high-school students.

Social Media Helping Teen Get To Juilliard

We all know college is not cheap! Most of us with student loans understand that money is a real issue when it comes to higher education. A 17-year-old musical genius from Toronto is feeling the financial pressure of higher education. Luckily, he is growing up in the era of social media, and he’s able to get his story out to the world; and the world is responding. William Leathers’ has already been accepted to Juilliard, a prestigious school for musicians, however his family has only saved about $25,000 CAD of the $91,000 CAD that it will take to get him through his first year at the institution.

Sure, lots of kids are looking for money for school and using social media as a way to assist them in getting help for the cost of tuition. Friends of William Leathers and his family believe that this young man is deserving of the extra help. At Age 12 William Leathers was the youngest person accepted to the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra. He also graduated high school 2 years early with all A’s.

Juilliard costs approximately $364,000 for four years, and as a Canadian student, Leathers does not qualify for financial aid or scholarships in America. A family friend of the musician headed to Twitter for help, and shared Leathers Crowdfunding page. So far, social media has helped to raise $54,390 of the $65,500 goal!

The ladies are appreciating the love that many men are showing, to honor black women; especially in the music industry. For so long, the music industry had been plagued with misogynistic overtones, that have been specifically aimed at black women. It is great to see that a few artists are now recogzining the importance of turning the tables on traditional, sexist hip hop lyrics.

Drake came with the summer slayer, “Nice For What” which is currently number 1 on Billboard’s Top 100. Mysonne, who is a rapper/activists decided to put his own spin on the record. In his lyrics, he recogizes the sacrifices black women have made for the culture, even though they are often overlooked.

But Nah, We neglect our women
We dont protect our women, We dont respect our women
We love everyone except our women
Then, we expect our women to just – Trust Us
We dont make sure our women get justice
They fight for us with everything they can muster
We mustve
Forgot our purpose
We disregard our earth
And just allow our worth – to diminish
We aint handling business
Some of these women is riding harder than men is…
