Because you’re black…people feel the need to kill you…
I mean they LITERALLY wake up and decide that based off the color of your skin complexion, the world is waking up every morning with the thought of getting rid of you because you are BLACK! So I ask the question how much longer are we going to take the murdering and now threatening of our people (young and old). Imagine getting up to go to class on a typical Monday morning and as you walk down the sidewalk people shout racial gestures, white students look at you while asking “how did you get your hair like that”? “Why are you here in our schools”? The day to day obscene words and gestures from people are students just like you are.

These are examples of what the students of the University of Missouri have dealt with since their first day of school. Even Johnathan Butler, who was hit by a car by a student for the color of his skin in the middle of the school’s parking lot. This treatment as crazy as it sounds happens most often at PWI’s (Prominently White Institutions) to the black students just because well they are black. Now, hear me when I say that I am far from saying that every white student does this but I am saying that it’s enough of them to have the camera’s eye on them.

However, the incidents continue with a young man by the name of Mark Hornickel, 19 and Hunter Park would send racist threats through social media on an app called Yak Yak specifically targeting the black students of the university.

But students would react back through protesting; even the football team would step in and refuse to play unless both the President (Tim Wolfe) and Chancellor (R. Bowin Loften) of the University step down. This would in fact happen after students displayed numerous emails of professors still insisting that they attend class inspire of the continuous threats. Countless emails appeared on social media of many teachers stating that not coming to class would be a penalty and the only way to beat the bullies was to come to class.
And if that’s not enough in California on November 3rd a student posted a racial message on the front of the schools computer with the headline reading “KKK FOREVER PUBLIC LYNICIN DECEMBER 9, 2015 .The email would come at 9pm the night before to the parents letting them know the situation and the next morning students would march in front of the library in protest. Nearly 3,000 of students would gather chanting for the Principal Sam Pasarow to do something about what was happening.

This month has been very interesting with the “holidays” upon us and many are focusing on the sales, especially Black Friday. Times like these are critical to the world because it’s a chance for the economic growth to expand; however with all that’s going on are we honestly going to continue in the celebration with our children’s lives at stake?

Even the incident with H&M stating that the white mannequins were more presentable then black ones (which they later apologized for) made no effort in stopping us from shopping there. Now, yes that is one of my favorite stores but here lately I mostly thrift and if I need be I definitely would stop shopping there.
My point is this, we as a people need to make a decision either we are going to truly stand or ground and fight for justice on a continuous basis instead of just when it’s on the media or when it is convenient then we will make more change then we can imagine. But first we must consider this:
Revolutions are bloody…..so do we still want one or nah?

So remember how Chance was supposed to drop us a mixtape around the holidays and we were all left wondering what happened? …well seems like that was postponed ..well good news if you were paying attention he premiered “Somewhere in Paradise”’ on NBC’s Saturday Night Live. But that is far from what else the Chicago rapper has been up to according to his tweet on December 25th where he announced on twitter about his latest project. It seems the Chicago rapper has been a part of a major campaign to collect donation for the homeless.

Chance teamed up with Warmest Winter and the Empowerment Plan ; a non -profit organization out of Detroit, Michigan to raise over $60,000 dollars in donations in 10 days to produce 1,000 coats for the homeless. Pretty dope right???!!!! This has got to be one of his best collaborations yet , I mean working with other artists is cool but when I tell you what else comes along with the donations you’re going to be shocked.

The Empowerment Plan says its able to mass produce 1,000 coats with a $100,000 budget and the goal is to have all of the coats distributed by January 13, 2016. But I’m still waiting to get to the best part the coats transform in to SLEEPING BAGS! ( they are self-heated as well) but they are a full length sleeping bag. How cool is that? That is an awesome invention to keep the homeless warm during the cold months as well just having something to sleep in at night. I’ve always thought about the many ways we can help the homeless out because they need things that we often take for granted.

CXKeRqtWYAAydof

And there’s more to this project! The production of the coats will also employ those who are homeless as well. So more ways to make sure that they are warm and they have jobs to help themselves, now that is a blessing in itself. Chance tweeted about the jobs in the picture below:

With over 125,000 Chicagoans homeless from 2014-2015 ( According to the Chicago Coalition) so these coats will defintely go to all that can. I encourage everyone who is able to go to warmestwinterchicago.com to donate so we can make sure as many people are able to stay warm this winter.

The donations also have different levels that very from eligibility to win Chicago Bulls Tickets or White Sox tickets or even to meet Chance the Rapper himself. So go NOW! To donate!

Yo!

Did anybody peep the awesome week in music? This past week …man who else’s playlist is on FLEEK this week lol? I mean if you are really a music head then you had a great week of eargasms ! (Yes that’s a made up word lol). But listen let’s get started because we had some people make a much needed appearance this week.

First up!! AHAAAAAAAAAAAA*Jadakiss voice* is BACK!!!!! The most underrated rapper is back with “Top 5 Dead or Alive”! I mean come on now whose list when it comes to rappers is Jadakiss missing from?? NOBODY unless you just need a better grip on who’s really a rapper. Jada is back with that sound we all miss, those raw bars and hardly any features. He is going HAM making it known that he is truly “top 5, dead or alive” in this rap game. Man I am still listening to this album because it has been so long since we’ve heard anything from the New York rapper not to mention he’s like almost absent from social media. We need him to get on that because we got to know every time he puts up the mic! You feel me?

Okay next we are going to detour from hip hop for a second and go here to Adele, with the album 25! !!!! IS BACK!!!!!! Man if you have yet to hear the album you need too! Because she came back full force with great vocals and awesome sounds of happy and sadness. The album “25” who was named that because it was during the time the singer was 25 and all of the things you experience at the age of 25. Although, she is 28, the need to want to express what was going through her mind while she was away was deeply rooted. Adele gives awesome tracks from “Hello”, Sweetest Devotion”, “Remedy” I mean the entire album is powerful as only she can deliver. And for those of you are NOT Adele fans …you need to become one today! Seriously because I believe the internet broke that night.

And before we go back to hip hop we got to give it up for Justin Bieber coming back with the “Purpose album” and guess who is on the album?…just guess ..I’ll wait…

The ETHER rapper himself NASIR JONES! The legend is on Bieber’s album! I mean I thought it was dope when Taylor had Kendrick Lamar, Janet Jackson had J.Cole but NAS on Justin’s album is crazy! And yes he delivers the bars we expect from him on the track “We Are”. And even with that this album is a good comeback for Justin; you can hear the growth in his lyrics and melodies. I am very proud of him for this album because it’s truly telling his story.

So since we’re back on hip hop…JEEZY!with “Churchin in the Streets” were he is addressing all of the issues that relative to Black people from being poverty stricken, police brutality , drugs, etc. Being himself is what Jeezy does best honestly. The highlight of the album is that Janelle Monae is on the album which is different for her and him musically. The Atlanta rapper is going in on everything but you can definitely tell he is about change in the world and “preaching” the message of change which is why he called the album “Churchin in the Streets”. I wonder if the church people are going to be upset with him again; remember what happened with the song “Holy Ghost” smh.

These next ones you just need to have in your library!

-Joe Budden

-Cassie Veggies

-Big K.R.I.T.

-Ty Dolla Sign (which is surprisingly good)

-Kyle

-Alessia Cara

-Logic

-Cee-Lo

-Jay Rock

I got some others but I’m a keep those secret for now……lol

But this next one…

TALIB KWELI AND 9th WONDER!!!!! LOOK just got get the album! Because the Jamla Squad if you are familiar with them is going IN! And if you have no idea who they are…go find out NOW! Because anything 9th puts his hands on his dope it’s just that plain and simple. This album is a must cop that there is no need to write a bunch of words to tell you guys , I just want you all go to get the album.

Okay, one more thing before I leave…

MY MAAAMMMMMMAAAAAAAAA *J.Cole voice* (in my head). Erykah Badu is dropping a mixtape this week! Called “But you can’t use my phone” and if you heard “Hotline Bling Remix” and “Phone Down” you know it’s going to be dope.

Alright see you guys next time.

“Black Friday” the mixtape with only 2 tracks but they are SO FIRE! That no one CARES!

These two FIRE rappers jumped on each other track and WOW!

Kendrick Lamar- SNAPS on “Tale of 2 Cities”

J.Cole –WENT OFF on “Alright”

I mean I almost fell off the couch because of the FIRE they both delivered! Then J.Cole said he dropping something in February! But that tracks cuts off so he left it a mystery.

*Calms Down*

Okay so much awesome music dropped this weekend it was ridiculous! Mixtapes were dropping left and right even the internet broke at one point it was so much downloading going on this weekend. Everything was clearly a must cop! Everybody’s playlist should be on FLEEK! With the release of dope albums last week to these mixtapes that were all surprises this week!

FIRST UP!!!!

Erykah Badu aka Madulla Obluganta aka Analog Girl in A Digital World, FatbellyBella, Annie, DJ. Low Down Loretta Brown, the A the P the P the L..L..E.S! ( you gotta be a fan to know all her names)

Drops the long awaited mixtape “But You Can’t Use My Phone! “

This mixtape is FIRE! I mean legit! And no I am not just saying that because I love her! I mean from top to bottom this mixtape is literally dope and there is no reason to turn it off! It was even full of surprises! And take a guess as to what they were….

The first one was ANDRE 3000!!!!!!! On the mixtape! Yes the collaboration everyone has been waiting on has finally happened! Erykah Badu and Andre 3000 on a track together! The name of the track is entitled “Hello” and 3 Stacks kills the verse as always! This was well worth the wait as fans hope that the rapper changes his mind and gives the fans at least one album! Even if it’s all remixes to his former tracks we will take it!

Next it was the fact that Erykah tweeted that she had a “Burn out” phone and had secretly hid her number on the covers for each track she dropped so that fans could call her! You talking about her phone were LIT for two days in a row! I was sad that I was unable to get through to speak with her personally; I probably would’ve played it cool but try to take up enough time so that nobody could get through. I mean she’s Erykah Badu.

Then on top of EVERYTHING! So many people thought Drake was on the mixtape because there were several tracks were it sounded like Drake. But if you were really listening it was someone different, and to top it off she tweeted

“Drake is not on the mixtape”

Turns out it was her son SEVEN (Andre’s son)! No wonder the lyrics were so dope! I mean his dad is Andre 3 stacks! So of course he has bars! By the way her mixtape broke ITunes because there were so many people trying to buy it …the site had the tracks out of order and some people couldn’t get onto the site.

Then Wayne then drops “No Celings 2” and GUESS WHO HE BROUGHT BACK FOR THE FIRST TRACK?!……

Now I will say off gate I thought this was going to be a terrible mixtape!, because after “Sorry For the Wait, I was so sorry I waited “…because he gave me hope with “No Ceilings” and then he came back with an album that helped me believe in him again but then I ‘m listening to the mixtape and who do I hear?

“Man….Man..Mannie FRESH”! Now if you are hip hop head and certainly if you are a true Wayne fan then you know MANNIE! Being on anything is DOPE! And the production of the track was dope just as he always does. This was EPIC! And as you are listening you get another surprise….CURREN$Y is on the mixtape as well! Now for my true fans you know it’s been a long time since these two did a track together especially after Curren$y left Cash Money years ago.

I have to say it was awesome to see these two working together. But wait let me back up…who remembers Turk? From Cash Money? Okay well I found him a couple of months ago on Twitter and he’s still rapping, well if anyone remembers it was really Turk that was the illest rapper out of the group (no debate) but he’s on the mixtape! To! And still got BARS!

I honestly believe Wayne went back and grabbed the real ones from Cash Money and decided to go in! And it worked.

Alright so here are the other projects that dropped this weekend as well.

Fabolous with the “Summertime Shoutout” mixtape which is Fire of course! I mean its Fabolous! So you expect nothing less. Go get it is all I’m going to say! I mean if you were following him when he was dropping freestyle every Friday then you know this is just what Fab does which is deliver jams!

Chris Brown- Before the Party -34 songs of pure raw content but he’s being himself which is what I am excited about. The one track “Holy Angel” that features Pusha T is dope because both are telling their stories of how their lives have been since they have been in the industry so it’s a must listen to !.

Rick Ross-Renzel Remixes, this one was alright. He basically took a lot of songs and remixed them which were good. I mean Rick Ross never really disappoints so definitely go get it if you are a fan.

Trey Songz- To Whom it May Concern – Trigga Trey is back with that sound we all love, all I’m a say is that he might be the reason that cheating becomes an epidemic and I’m a leave it at that! Lol.

Alright Hunties that’s it for this week!. I’ll be back with some more soon.

Homecoming: The New Black Family Reunion

Hey we all know it’s that time of the year were fall weather is in the air, football is back, layering of clothes, state fairs, hot hearty foods and holidays.
But it’s also that time of year where one month holds the greatest experience on EARTH!….HBCU HOMECOMINGS!!! Yes! These events are a must go to every year especially if you are an alumni of one because it’s the time to walk your old stomping grounds and celebrate good times with classmates and friends.

It’s time to share those stories familiar stories from standing in the infamous Financial Aid lines to that last year of when Graduation is upon you. I mean there are some things that simply only college students can relate to because we practically grew up together in a 4 year time frame. We build new bonds whether you joined a sorority or fraternity , made a long time crew of loyal friends we all share stories and experiences. I mean it was like Actually attending Hillman from the classic television show “A Different World” because that’s what so many us relate the college experience to.

I mean there are just some things you can only relate to if you attended an HBCU! Such as:

-Wednesdays ; which were the best days to eat because “Soul Food” was served! Foods like fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, sweet potatoes, corn bread etc. and you knew them as “Chicken Wednesday’s”.
-Step Shows! Watching the Divine 9 go at it showing their skill and creativity in their performances.
-10:40 Break! The time set apart on Tuesdays and Thursdays were a surprise show would go on outside, giving students a break in between classes to wind down and have fun ( maybe this one was only at NCCU lol)
-The Band! Enough said because everyone loves the band especially when they are playing songs that you know and playing that infamous song “For the Black Folk”
-Rival games where you could show your school spirit and cheering on your team
-Probates; the fun of seeing who made the choice to join organizations

HBCU students share a bond! Period even if schools are rivals we all share a common bond because the experience at one is unexplainable to anyone who has never been a part of it; I mean literally it’s a Family Reunion because everyone travels near and far to come celebrate together to relive those great memories of struggle and perseverance those 4 long years.

As college students many would argue that we don’t learn anything or that we simply just party all the time but I’m here to tell you that is untrue because not only do we learn many things, we also gain knowledge of who we are as a people but who we are individuals as well. We celebrated one another’s accomplishments and we taught each other different things.

Imagine being in a world where everyone comes from some place different and we all become family in what to the world is a short period of time but to us was longer. We became family and have closer bonds then the ones we made growing up. So yes homecoming’s are a big deal because they are for US the students to come back together and celebrate each other so it’s more than just a party it’s a REUNION!
