Tara Wright & Mallory Cave Make History

Many of us are not interested in heading to Alaska anytime soon because we are just getting use to some warm weather, after winter seemed like it would never leave. But, just in case you’re feeling like getting frigid, you’ll be glad to know you’re in good hands if you decide to board Alaska Airlines. Hopefully, you will get a chance to board a plane led by some history making crew members, who are making waves and marking their place in history.

On Mothers Day, the flight started out like any other flight with boring directions and instructions of how to exactly strap on that flotation device. Captain Tara Wright alongside First Officer Mallory Cave made their appearance in the cabin and brightened the passengers’ day with an exciting announcement. Wright had to let them know that their flight would be like no other Alaskan Air flight in the last 86 years. In her address, she stated:

“I’d like to introduce myself and my crew… you’re sharing a pretty interesting piece of Alaska Airlines history this morning. You’ll be piloted by two African-American female pilots, for the first time in Alaska Airlines history. You’re making [history] this morning, whether you’re awake or not,” joked Wright, as passengers began to applaud.

As the passengers continued to applaud these groundbreaking women, they also requested the pilots pose for pictures which you can see below. This was an amazing Mothers Day story, Black history event, and Women’s history milestone – all at the same damn time!

Alaska Airline cosigned this announcement by stating, “What Bessie Coleman started in 1921, we continue here.” One would think the airline would have gave the public something more, but we’ll just ignore that for right now.

Congratulations to Captain Tara Wright and First Officer Mallory Cave, two history-making pilots!

Do Something Different

It’s always good to get out and find that one thing to do that you haven’t done in a while. Often, many of us feel like getting out and having a good time, but we aren’t that interested in going to the club, or we just went to a party last month and don’t feel like going to see the same old people. Sometimes, you just want to do some different!

Well, two young business owners are changing the game for Monks Corner, South Carolina, and giving that area something dope and creative. The Art Lounge had their grand opening this weekend, and if you’re in search of something that you can do on a date, with your kids, a girls night out, or by yourself – then this is where you need to be. What’s extra dope about the Art Lounge is that it’s the only sip n’ paint business in the Lowcountry owned by young, black, female entrepreneurs, Shay Harrington and Tina Snider and (if i’m wrong, leave a comment).

The Art Lounge, paint classes, and sip n’ paints, are trends that will never go out of style. Where else can you listen to your favorite music, party, sip wine, learn a skill, AND get to take something home with you? This weekend during their grand opening, Shay and Tina had Savannah from Star 99.7 host their big event, and even had a special celebrity guest in the building, O’Shit of VH1’s Black Ink. They also provided very dope instructors/artists including, JaySoul, Casso Washington, and Grizzly! Everyone seemed to be having a good time, and were all smiles when they finally left with their beautiful and unique masterpieces. The Art Lounge is definitely dope, and we have to applaud these women (Shay and Tina) for launching this business can bringing art and creativity to the Lowcountry.

To book your spot at the Art Lounge, head over to their site The Art Lounge, click here for their Facebook Page and stay tuned to see more pics and videos from the event!

Da Ice Cold Hour

One thing that I love that’s giving television and radio a run for their money, are all of the breakout podcasts that have been launched over the past two to three years. Many young, black millenials are taking it upon themselves to launch their own digital platforms in order to share what they believe is valuable. Some have launched Podcasts in order to share information and/or teach a lesson or a skill. And there are some that have launched Podcasts in order to discuss hot topics, have tough conversations, and discuss subjects that many are afraid to touch. Some of my favorites are Myleik Teele’s Podcast, the Brilliant Idiots, and How I Made This. These podcasts are all different and dope for various reasons. But, what’s more fun is being a guest on a Podcast – why; because you never know what to expect or what’s going to happen.

This past Sunday, I was invited to be a guest on Da Ice Cold Hour and it was definitely a roller coaster! The cast consists of Shorty vs Eliot, Mr. Ice Cold, DJ Fashow, DJ Meechie, and DJ Q, – all DJs! Knowing the personality of most DJs, we already know that conversations can have a tendency to get crazy. We talked about lots of things (probably some things I shouldn’t say here – lol). From side-pieces and friends, to Azalea Banks vs Cardi B, to guys trapping women with pregnancy – the topics flowed. The awesome thing about an all-male podcast is that listening to conversations from a complete male perspective, especially males who are not trying to put on a front, can be very interesting. Very often when people know they are in front of an audience, their personalities don’t seem very authentic; however with this crew – the personalities that come together to form Da Ice Cold Hour are authentic, raw, and outspoken. Check out a few soundbites below, and check them out Each Sunday on www.NobodyGrindsRadio.net owned by Juan PD Phillips and produced by Jey Brown- also, excuse my gum chewing-so unprofessional (LMAO).

F You; Pay Me

Many remember back in 2001 when Charleston, SC native and Brunswick’s Glynn Academy star, Kwame Brown was the number 1 draft pick, and chosen by the Washington Wizards to enter the NBA. Brown was picked up straight out of high school and that’s every young kids’ dream – right? Well, very often dreams can turn into nightmares when you’re facing a new world of new people, new challenges, and new money. According to court documents, Brown is now suing Merrill Lynch, Bank of America and his former financial advisor, Michelle Marquez.

The deal was that Brown hired these institutions to handle a $17 million investment. The investor, Michelle, would invest, trade and collect on behalf of Brown, from 2004 til 2017. As far as investing and trading, his financial advisor was free to trade and move money around, but only with Brown’s consent. Brown is claiming Michelle Marquez did the following:

  • Opened several bank accounts in his name without his knowledge
  • Deposited money into these secret bank accounts
  • Invested and traded Brown’s money from these secret bank accounts
  • Collected the commission from trading with these secret bank accounts

Brown is also claiming in 2006, after he borrowed $1.1 million and instructed Marquez to pay it off immediately, she did not pay off the loan. Instead, she decided to convert the unpaid portions into a line of credit. Kwame Brown didn’t find out most of the details of what was going on until 2015, and says he never approved many of these transactions. He is also claming that these unauthorized dealings have caused him to have significant financial losses.

in 2017, Brown claims he tried to get in touch with Marquez but could never get her on the phone to talk about these matters, even though he could always get her on the phone prior to finding out about the questionable transactions. Now Merrill Lynch and Bank of America is telling Brown that he currently has no money with either of these institutions. He was told that he authorized for Merrill Lynch and Bank of America to trade, invest, and control his money. And it appears that they did just that – invested $17 million and ended with $0. To make matters worse, Brown is claiming he believes documents with his signature to authorize were forged, and he’s hired forensic experts to confirm.

Brown’s lawyer is seeking the return of his $17 million dollar investment, plus damages. During his 13 year career with the NBA, he earned around $64 million; and although that’s a lot of money, Brown wants his coins. By the way, media outlets have reached out to Michelle Marquez for comments – so far she hasn’t returned any calls.
