The story of Kalief Browder is burned in our memories forever. The thought of a 16-year-old kid being held in one of the countries toughest prisons, accused of a crime that he didn’t commit, sounds like something out of a made-for-television movie, but this was real life for Browder. You can read more about Kalief’s life in an article we wrote in January, when President Obama decided to ban solitary confinement for teens.

Even though Browder’s case has been discussed in detail in a few documentaries this past year, including the13th documentary on Netflix, directed by Ava Duvernay, Browder’s story will now get the attention it deserves thanks to Jay Z.

The music mogul, along with Jennifer Furst will be releasing a documentary in March 2017 titled, ‘The Kalief Browder Story’, a two-part Documentary Series which will premiere on Spike TV. The series will walk viewers through Browder’s arrest in 2010 at the age of 16, his three year imprisonment without having a conviction, and his release in 2013. Unfortunately, the series will also cover Kalief’s 2015 suicide due to the affects of being imprisoned as an innocent teen.

Since Jay Z landed a movie and television deal with Weinstein Company, he has been committed to telling the story of Browder; he was also one of the many celebrities that got a chance to meet Browder after he was released from prison. Jay had asked his assistant to track Browder down after his release in hopes of meeting Kalief, who was around 19 years old at the time. Jay Z spoke more about his commitment to be a voice using his new television deal:

“We’re the voice. We’re society. We affect change. We can change everything. Our voices are stronger than ever. If everyone in this room is like, ‘I don’t agree with this happening to a 16-year-old,’ then it won’t happen again. It’s that simple.”

The Kalief Browder Story will premiere during the Sundance Film Festival and will debut on television on Spike TV Wednesday, March 1 at 10 p.m. ET.

For the past eight years, the Obama administration has created and led the charge on a variety of social initiatives developed to push our communities forward and empower youth throughout the United States. President Obama held the final My Brother’s Keeper Summit (MBK) on this past Wednesday at the White House. This final summit was a way for the President to say goodbye and to thank everyone who played a part in improving the lives of young men of color across America; but it was also a gesture in the President’s commitment to make certain that this program would continue to grow, even beyond his term as President.

Here are Five cool things you should know about My Brother’s Keeper:

My Brother’s Keeper

MBK was formed in 2014 as a way for young to find mentors from within their communities and to build these young men up in order for them to reach their full potentials.

The MBK Challenge

250 different communities throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, and 19 Tribal nations have accepted the MBK Challenge. The challenge is a call to action for cities, tribal nations, towns and counties to build and execute plans to ensure young people- no matter who they are – can achieve their full potential.

MBK Responsibility

There are not only community activists and businessmen involved in the program, but even celebrities have joined forces with the President to ensure its goal is carried out, even beyond his presidency.

President Obama explained that it will be a dual responsibility of both the government and the communities that this program be continued.

“There’s an infrastructure that has to be built by the government to ensure that our young people can succeed and prosper in this 21st-century economy. We can’t wait for government to do it for us.We gotta make sure that we’re out there showing what works. We gotta put in our own time and energy and effort and money into the effort. We have to be rigorous in measuring what works. We can’t hang on to programs just because they’ve been around a long time. We can’t be protective of programs that have not produced results for young people even if they produced jobs for some folks running them.”

-President Barack Obama

Rethink Discipline Campaign

As he confirms his commitment to MBK, the President announced the started of the Rethink Discipline Campaign, another initiative created by the White House and the Department of Education that will identify the disciplinary components carried out across the countries based on race, gender, and disability. A report on Wednesday found:

220,000 students were referred to law enforcement

70,000 students and school-related arrests from 2013-2014

When comparing race and ethnicity, school referrals and school-related arrests showed huge disparities

Black students received more suspensions and had higher number of arrests

MBK Success

The story of Malachi Hernandez is a prime example of how one great mentor can impact the life of one young person. Hernandez, who was at the White House on Wednesday, gave the opening remarks and introduced President Obama to the crowd during Wednesday’s summit. Hernandez, grew up poor, and his father left him when he was seven years old. Hernandez is now the first to go to college and had a few more things in common with the President. Hernandez stated during his introduction how his meeting with POTUS has impacted his life:

“He told me how he also grew up without his father…” he later continued talking about the advice he have the President when asked about improvements that needed to be made with the MBK program, “I emphasized to him that all young people need is love.”

In another first, the Canadian Finance Minister has announced that activist Viola Desmond will be replacing John Macdonald, the nation’s first prime minister, on the $10 bill. Viola Desmond will be the first black woman to ever be put on the nation’s currency.

In a nomination held earlier this year by the Bank of Canada, citizens were asked to nominate an iconic woman to be placed on the new banknote. After receiving over 26,000 submissions, they narrowed it down to 461 names, then chose the top five; Desmond was the lead choice over hundreds of names.

Viola Desmond fought for equality, and against racism for people of color in Canada in the 1940’s. Prime Minister Trudeau described her as a, “business woman, community leader, and a courageous fighter against racism.” As a successful business woman coming from a middle-class family, her most monumental moment in the fight for justice was when she refused to give up her seat in the “whites only” section of a movie theatre in Nova Scotia in 1946. According to reports from Aljazeera, she was arrested and fought the charge in a court of law. Viola Desmond was the first black woman to legally challenge segregation laws in Canada. Even though she passed in 1965, she was not pardoned for her ‘crime’ until 2010.

Wanda Robinson, the sister of Viola Desmond, was able to attend able to attend the ceremony for the announcement, stated that the country’s acknowledgement of her sister almost brought her to tears, “Viola inspires us today as she inspired people years ago. I’m so proud, I’m almost in tears.”

December 15

Dylann Roof has been found guilty of all 33 counts of hate crimes, damage to religious property, violent crimes, and murder in the case of Charleston, SC Emanuel Nine. Reports from inside the courtroom say that Dylann Roof is standing with his arms by his side, with no expression.

A decision on whether Dylann Roof will get the death penalty is set to begin January 3, 2017.

The lives of the Emanuel Nine will leave us remembering how precious every moment of life is, and helps us to understand how important it is to live each moment to its fullest. This case is also a stark reminder of how real hate can be, and the hate that Dylann Roof learned and allowed to fester in his heart was not something from the 50’s or 60’s, but it was a hate that was born right here, right now, in the age of the internet.

The jury has been instructed not to speak to anyone regarding the trial until after the penalty phase is complete. During the penalty phase, Dylann Roof decided earlier in the trial to represent himself. Roof confirmed for the judge that he understands he is facing the death penalty as the judge advises him that it is a “bad decision to represent himself. Dylann will continue after today to represent himself as the penalty phase of the trial continues.

December 9, 2016

On yesterday, we reported the mother of murderer Dylann Roof, passed out after the very detailed and chilling opening statements from the prosecution were presented to the jury. Reports are now saying that Roof’s mother had a heart attack after listening to yesterday’s statements, and was rushed to the hospital.

Also, the witness testimony of the mother of Tywana Sanders caused a heated debate in the courtroom. On yesterday during her testimony, Felicia Sanders, one of the survivors from Emanuel continuously described Dylann Roof as “evil”, her words were: “He’s evil. There is no place on earth for him except the pit of hell.”

The defense is claiming that her comments suggest a sentence for Roof, even though guilt has not been established.

Because of Felicia Sander’s statements and the medical condition of Roof’s mother, the defense made a motion for a mistrial, claiming that those types of statements “do not belong in a courtroom.”

The judge ruled that he would instruct the jury on the comments, but would not strike them from the record. He also overruled their request for a mistrial.

December 8, 2016

Today, after the chilling opening statements made by the prosecution in the trial against Dylann Roof, a woman relative, witnesses are claiming is Dylann Roof’s mother collapsed, sobbing at the closing of the prosecution’s presentation to the jury.

Today marks the first day of the trial against Dylann Roof. Prior to the start of court this morning, the judge was still striking out potential jurors and a final selection of jury members were chosen, seated, and sworn in.

Opening statements began with the prosecution introducing the Emmanuel AME victims to the jury, one by one, and by name. Not only did the prosecution provide each name, but he also provided a picture into the life of each victim.“Cynthia Hurd joined, went to church that afternoon to drop something off. Convinced by others’ excitement to be there, she stayed.”

The prosecution continued:

“Roof scouted Emanuel AME by calling in February and asking weeks before the shooting about the times of services. Drove for 90 minutes to Charleston, knowing what he intended to do. Loaded 88 hollow point bullets into magazines, shot Rev. Clementa Pinckney first, while sitting in the seat Pinckney had offered Roof next to his. When Tywanza Sanders told Dylann Roof he didn’t have to do this, Roof replied: “Ya’ll are raping our white women. Ya’ll are taking over the world”

The prosecution’s opening continues, “The defendant’s attacked was cold and calculated. it was done with malace in his heart and mind.”

Court will continue, today with witness testimony starting with Felicia Sanders, the mother of Tywana, one of the victims from the night of the Emanuel shooting.

Breaking: Dylann Roof, the man accused of murdering nine members from the Mother Emanuel Church in Charleston, SC has been granted permission by a judge to represent himself during his upcoming trial.

Roof is facing 33 charges which include hate crime and murder; he was also confirmed competent to stand trial. Judge Gergel believed that Roof was “strategically unwise” in making this decision, but granted him permission to do so as Roof’s former lawyer made room for him, sliding over as a signal that Dylann Roof is now head council.

Shout out to Appetite for Change out in North Minneapolis for creating a movement that promotes healthy eating and cooking within the communities that need this information the most. Appetite for Change teamed up with the Beats and Rhymes Crew to help shine a light on the importance of realizing what is being fed to many people in lower income communities, and how we can combat this by growing our on food. These young rappers are spitting some real bars, that are a little too real:

See in my hood there ain’t really much to eat.

Popeyes on the corner, McDonald’s right across the street.

All this talk about guns and the drugs, pretty serious

but look at what they feeding ya’ll

that’s what’s really killing us

This is such a positive message, done in a really dope way; and if you didn’t do just a little DAB, then I’m not really sure what’s wrong with you. Check it out!
