Fortnite vs. The Culture

They love the culture, but do they love us? Popular online, third-person shooter game Fortnite is doing what Colonizers do best – jacking the culture. To date, creator Epic Games is currently the owner of the most popular online game in history. Recently Epic and Fortnite have come under fire for ripping off dance moves from hip-hop artists and other popular young blacks online. So far, no law suits have been filed, but according to Forbes, artists and hip-hop connoisseurs are posing the question, “are dance moves protected under copyright?

In Fortnite, players can choose different “Emotes” or dances, these emotes appear to look exactly like the dances created by artists such as Snoop Dogg, Memphis rapper BlocBoy JB, and Brooklyn rapper 2 Milly. The makers of Fortnite have gotten so slick about stealing these dances for their own financial come up, that they have renamed many of the dances that can be purchased through the gaming system. For example, the culture knows a dance showcased in the game is called the “Milly Rock”, however in Fortnite, its called the “Swipe It”. 2 Milly is currently threatening to sue Epic games for stealing his signature dance.

Thankfully, there are some big named rappers that are calling out these culture vultures. Chance The Rapper was one of the first entertainers to bring attention to Fortnite using these dances from hip hop culture. “Black creatives created and popularized these dances but never monetized them. Imagine the money people are spending on these Emotes being shared with the artists that made them,” the No Problems rapper expressed in his tweets back in July.

Since last year, Epic Games has raked in over $1 billion in sales, and since Fortnite is a free game, this means that the sale of these hip hop emotes and other items from the popular gaming system, has been how Epic and made most of its money.

However, the question still remains. Is it possible to copyright a dance? According to Forbes’ Intellectual Property Law definition, here are the details:

It is possible to copyright a dance, but not an individual dance move. The dance must have a series of movements that are arranged in a unique, original sequence in order to have copyright protection. This is because one simple move is considered to be only one building block of an entire choreographed dance. For example, a songwriter cannot copyright a musical note but can copyright a song, which is a unique arrangement of notes.

It’s definitely a grey area when it comes to the creators of these dances to be able to get credit for their dances. In the meantime, there is lots of online talk about boycotting Epic, and other steps these creators can take to get paid, and/or protect their creative property. Right now, all we can do is make sure we tell everyone that the culture vultures are on the loose and they may hate you, but they love your culture.

Despite this weird need that many young blacks have that attempt to sway their counterparts from voting in elections, for various reasons that claim that voting doesn’t make a difference, or things will not change even if they do vote. Candidates are spending millions in an attempt to win the black vote, ancestors died for the right to vote, so convincing anyone that voting is not important doesn’t seem to fall in line with the millions who seek to earn/use these votes. So at a time when so many are trying to convince others not to vote – in walks our favorite rapper of 2016, Chance The Rapper!
Chance sold us on his ability to be cool, be a rapper, and be a positive influence with a combination of things. First, the “No Problems” video is probably one of the greatest videos produced this year, upbeat, lyrically appealing and just plain happy! Chance is also the guy that is always tweeting out positive vibes, even after Wayne announced his possible retirement, Chance tweeted this tweet below:

Who would be more fitting than Chance the Rapper at encouraging voter turnout? Chances, along with the NAACP are teaming up to bring voter registration to different cities during his Magnificent Coloring World Tour. The campaign is called #StayWokeAndVote, NAACP President and CEO Cornell William Brooks goes on to explain:
“Chance the Rapper is an artist whose music praises and lifts up our common humanity, and whose call for actions speaks to the yearning of this moment. This year, more than it has in a generation; we must use the power of our voices and our votes and exercise our sacred right to vote.”

So remember how Chance was supposed to drop us a mixtape around the holidays and we were all left wondering what happened? …well seems like that was postponed ..well good news if you were paying attention he premiered “Somewhere in Paradise”’ on NBC’s Saturday Night Live. But that is far from what else the Chicago rapper has been up to according to his tweet on December 25th where he announced on twitter about his latest project. It seems the Chicago rapper has been a part of a major campaign to collect donation for the homeless.

Chance teamed up with Warmest Winter and the Empowerment Plan ; a non -profit organization out of Detroit, Michigan to raise over $60,000 dollars in donations in 10 days to produce 1,000 coats for the homeless. Pretty dope right???!!!! This has got to be one of his best collaborations yet , I mean working with other artists is cool but when I tell you what else comes along with the donations you’re going to be shocked.

The Empowerment Plan says its able to mass produce 1,000 coats with a $100,000 budget and the goal is to have all of the coats distributed by January 13, 2016. But I’m still waiting to get to the best part the coats transform in to SLEEPING BAGS! ( they are self-heated as well) but they are a full length sleeping bag. How cool is that? That is an awesome invention to keep the homeless warm during the cold months as well just having something to sleep in at night. I’ve always thought about the many ways we can help the homeless out because they need things that we often take for granted.

And there’s more to this project! The production of the coats will also employ those who are homeless as well. So more ways to make sure that they are warm and they have jobs to help themselves, now that is a blessing in itself. Chance tweeted about the jobs in the picture below:

With over 125,000 Chicagoans homeless from 2014-2015 ( According to the Chicago Coalition) so these coats will defintely go to all that can. I encourage everyone who is able to go to warmestwinterchicago.com to donate so we can make sure as many people are able to stay warm this winter.

The donations also have different levels that very from eligibility to win Chicago Bulls Tickets or White Sox tickets or even to meet Chance the Rapper himself. So go NOW! To donate!
