Mari Filer

If you’re a fan of DJ Khaled on SnapChat, like the rest of the world, you will notice he constantly makes ‘THEY’ references. He says things like:
“THEY don’t want you to win.”
“THEY don’t want you to jetski, THEY don’t want you to smile.”
“The key is don’t entertain THEY, keep THEY away from you and tell THEY to bow down and kneel.”
“THEY don’t want you to have a bigger pool than Kanye.”

As hilarious as Khaled may be, his positive messages and warnings about THEY on social media ring true. Fast forward to the month of May.

Graduates all over the country are celebrating the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. The trends of posting elaborately decorated graduating caps, #squadgoal graduation selfies, and glamour graduation pics are popping up across social media.

Mari Filer, a high school graduate from Tuscaloosa, Alabama decided she would also post her graduation pic online to celebrate her amazing accomplishments. Mari isn’t just a regular student, Mari Filer is the Valedictorian at Central High School, has a 4.56 GPA (yes you can achieve over a 4.0). Mari received over $2.8 million in scholarships and has been accepted to 23 colleges!

Let’s face it, a young woman with these accomplishments deserves praise and recognition, which she received from all over the world. Mari’s Twitter post quickly went viral, and in the realm of social media, we know this can be an overwhelming event, in both good and bad ways. Mari was bombarded with a host of positive commentary, from positive people with common sense enough to understand that this is a child that should be applauded. In a society that is constantly bombarded with images of young black teens being killed, arrested, and accused plastered all over television and social media, here we have a teen that challenges the images that are constantly thrown at us via news and media.

Despite this perfect story of achievement; here comes THEY:

We won’t even bore you with the rest of the negative commentary, but THEY couldn’t even take one day off to applaud a young woman. As a matter of fact, THEY couldn’t even take a day off to simply not say anything at all. You see, THEY are the haters, the skeptics, the thumbthugs, the cyper-bullies, and the trash of social media. THEY are those that call black people niggers on Twitter, but turn around and smile in a black person’s face at work on Monday mornings. THEY are the individuals in the comments sections of your local news papers and tv station websites and Facebook pages looking forward to spewing their hatred – ANONYMOUSLY. THEY are simply trash, that in the age of social media you must take action in teaching your children how to ignore THEY, because THEY have caused some teens and adolescents to harm themselves. THEY suck, but what we must know about THEY is that, many times THEY are jealous and simply don’t like themselves.

Luckily, THEY didn’t affect Mari Filer. The young genius responded to her haters:
“When I post my accomplishments or awards, I always give God the credit because it’s his to give,” the valedictorian told WIAT News. “God is not done with me yet.”

(shout out to her parents for bringing her up in the Church! #handclapEmoji)

Her Mom, Leslie Filer, who is an educator, this time in the spotlight for her daughter is something she’s prepared her for.

“When you show them good direction, then eventually they get to this place where you are no longer nudging, but guiding and following,” Leslie said.

Filer went on to say, “This type of success is available to anybody,” and she revealed that she will be following in the footsteps of her proud father by attending his alma mater, Florida A&M University!

In the meantime, we wish Mari Filer much success, we have a feeling that this young lady will make a mark on the world and continue to stunt on THEY.
