#FlyFarrahFly

It was another dark day for South Carolina; on October 3rd, officers in Florence were ambushed after attempting to serve a warrant at the home of 74-year-old Frederick Hopkins Jr. Hopkins has since been charged with one count of murder and six counts of attempted murder. These charges are now expected to be upgraded due to the passing of a second deputy, Farrah Turner.

Farrah Turner has been in critical condition since October 3rd and underwent several surgeries prior to her passing. She had recently had both feet amputated in an attempt to save her life. Turner’s mother made a post earlier this week thanking everyone for their prayers:

“First, I thank everyone for their prayers for my daughter, Farrah. As we have told everyone, she is still in critical condition and she is not out of the woods yet. This horrendous act of violence has altered my daughter’s life forever but I do believe that God has a plan for her.”

Sheriff Kenny Boone described Turner as, “the ultimate professional, excelling at everything she did. She dedicated her life to serving the victims of the worst crimes imaginable.”

Farrah Turner was the officer that initially filed the paperwork for the search warrant of Frederick Hopkins Jr’s home. This warrant was initiated because of the 28-year-old son of Hopkins who was living in the home, who had been accused of a criminal sexual act against a child.

As of today, funeral arrangements are still being finalized for officer Turner; prayers for Turner, this family, and the city of Florence.

Uganda Boasts Another Elite Chess Champion

A 17-year-old Ugandan girl has won a World Title at the World Chess Olympiad. Gloria Nansubuga, who started playing chess at the age of 4, is now the third highest-ranked Woman Fédération Internationale des Échecs or World Chess Federation master.

At age 13, Gloria Nansubuga dominated chess competitions within her country. She was the top Under 14 player and 6th overall of the total female chess players in Uganda. On the continent of Africa, among girls under 14, she ranked 4 out of 25 and 142 out of 2,649 total chess female players in Africa. Worldwide, Nansubuga was ranked 6,205 out of 168,055 female chess players.

In America, we probably know Gloria Nansubuga best from her depiction in Disney’s, a movie about Phiona Mutesi, another Ugandan chess champion who has changed the face of the game the world over. Glora Nansubuga was responsible for teaching Phiona how to play chess.

Phiona Mutesi Queen Of Katwe

The FIDE World Chess Olympiad is an intense chess tournament which puts intellect and skill to the test, for every elite chess player within this competition. There are 11 rounds, 185 teams from 183 countries, and 919 total players. The women’s’ competition consists of 151 teams from 149 countries, with 749 total players which include almost all of the women’s world chess elite. Within FIDE there are four levels of mastery, Grandmaster (GM) 2500+, International master (IM) 2400+, FIDE master (FM) 2300+, and Candidate master (CM) 2200+. Nansubuga bypassed Woman Candidate Master (WCM) to become Woman FIDE Master (WFM). This move made Gloria Nansubuga the first Ugandan to make this type of leap in a tournament.

Uganda has a roster of elite players, Phiona Mutesi and Ivy Amoko are Uganda’s first chess players who have actually earned titles and attained the Woman Candidate Master Ranking. 17-year-old Gloria Nansubuga has now pushed the envelope even further with her newest feat. We are looking forward to what these ladies have in store and how they are single-handedly changing the face of the elite chess playing world.

808s & Deactivates

Kanye West has officially left Twitter and Instagram and everyone is breathing a sigh of relief. Why, because after last week’s rant and his unplanned speech supporting Donald Trump, saying that “slavery wasn’t real“, and that “the Democratic plan was to break up black families with welfare” – we are all muhfukkin tired!

Well, on SNL last night during Pete Davidson’s monologue, he discussed how embarrassed he was to witness Kanye’s speech; so embarrassed, that he actually left the stage. Most importantly, Pete, who has a history of suffering from mental illness is fed up with Kanye using mental illness as an excuse for his antics.

Now, even though Yeezy deleted his account on Saturday morning, he had to have known he was going to get clowned on SNL on Saturday night, because this wouldn’t be the first time SNL dragged Kanye West. Kanye has a long history of beef with Saturday Night Live; XXL covered this history with the article, A Timeline Of Kanye West’s Up-And-Down Relationship With ‘SNL’. Check out Davidson’s full monologue below, and enjoy Twitter now that Yeezy is outta here; if only we can get rid of that OTHER twitter guy, life would be awesome.

Here are 10 Reasons to support saving the historical Longpoint School, the last standing African American School East of the Cooper

  1. The Longpoint School is the LAST Standing African American School East Of The Cooper
  2. The school was built in 1903. Starting in 1863, Charleston, S.C. put a ban on slave children getting an education, which in turn led to a downward spiral in the black community that still is affected by this law until this day. The Snowden community was established after the Reconstruction, when blacks had to create their own communities, businesses, and schools.

  3. Today, the one room school house sits off of Longpoint Road behind a chain-link fence. Once ambushed by weeds and shrubbery, the overgrown debris has been cleared by a team of volunters who are working on trying to save the historical building.
  4. The old school sits on a 4-acre parcel that the Mazyck family of Snowden has owned for a century, but the family has a contract to sell it to a company that plans to build a new health care building.
  5. This schoolhouse was once a school for all blacks in and throughout the Snowden area, through 7th grade. There are still plenty of residents who are still living who attended the tiny school.
  6. Like so many other parcels of land across the Lowcountry, a developer has purchased the school property & funding is needed to move the building before the developer demolishes it.
  7. The Snowden community is raising funds to physically move the school before the developer destroys it. Then, the plan would be to restore the school building.
  8. “It is a virtually intact artifact of one of the most pivotal periods in United States history. It is a physical manifestation of the challenges faced by formerly unfree African-Americans as they sought to improve their lives through education. It is also illustrative of the facilities provided by the State of South Carolina for African-American education. The transition to the Jennie Moore School from the Long Point Elementary School is illustrative of the long struggle toward equal rights for African-Americans in a political, social and economic environment that sought to restrict these rights at every turn through every means available. The building itself tells these truths and should be conserved and preserved as a precious reminder of this very dark period in American history.”Grant Gilmore, Historic Preservation and Community Planning Program Director

  9. Neither the family nor the developer has a need for the historic school house, which is documented that it appears to be structurally sound, but definitely needs some work.
  10. The GoFundMe page for the Longpoint school as only raised $275 this month, but according to the Post & Courier, the school has raised a total of $10,000. $28,000 is needed to physically move the school. The total fundraising goal is $200,000. Click HERE to give a donation.
