Oh the sounds of the Alt-Right bleeding hearts right now. The family of General Robert E. Lee, one of the primary leaders of the confederacy during the Civil War, has thrown a monkey-wrench into the symbolic stance of confederate monuments, signs, and markers . The descendants of Lee are speaking out and denouncing White Nationalists and Nazi’s, after the violence that occurred in Charlottesville, Virginia. Not only are they denouncing these cultural heretics, they also have some interesting opinions about how the nation should handle confederate symbols and statues that still stand throughout the United States today. From the family of Robert E Lee:

Robert E. Lee V, the great-great grandson of Lee told Newsweek, “There’s no place for that hate.” His sister, Tracy Lee Crittenberger, pushed this message of love by condemning white nationalists and stating, their Confederate ancestor “would not have tolerated such behavior.”

Lee-Crittenberger also believes the place for confederate monuments are in a museum: “I think that is absolutely an option, to move it to a museum and put it in the proper historical context. Times were very different then. We look at the institution of slavery, and it’s absolutely horrendous. Back then, times were just extremely different. We understand that it’s complicated in 2017, when you look back at that period of time. If you want to put statues of General Lee or other Confederate people in museums, that makes good sense.”

Now, if the blood relatives understand the impact of removing these confederate symbols and putting them in their proper place, then what’s wrong with the rest of you all?

This is probably the most important seven minutes you will spend watching a video on the internet. C-SPAN broadcasted a speech from the mother of Heather Heyer, the young woman murdered at an anti-protest rally in Charlottesville, Virginia last week. You will hear most parent say they never expect to bury their own child, but the grace, strength and firmness that Susan Bro shows in this message is powerful.

In her message we learned that 32-year-old Heather was firm about her beliefs, and was a person who stood on the grounds that people need to be held accountable for their actions. “She was a firm believer in EVERYTHING she believed.” explained Susan.

Most importantly, Susan Bro has asked that each of us use our voices to have the tough conversations and speak out against the injustices that we see daily. She asks, “what is there that you can do to make the world a better place? What injustice do you see?” and pleaded for us to, “channel our anger into righteous action.”

Heather’s last Facebook Post, which has been shared across the world, was, “If you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention”, and because of Heather and her family, we believe that more people will start to pay attention, speak up when they see injustices, and hold one another accountable for our actions.

“I’d rather have my child, but by golly, if i gotta give her up, we’re going to make it count!”

The day you graduate from college after all of those long hard years of studying, working, while simultaneously trying to party and maintain your stellar GPA is a day you never forget. For 23-year-old Justin Campbell, his graduation day memory went viral on Twitter, and made everyone smile because of a small mistake. Campbell, a recent graduate from Coastal Carolina University located in Conway, South Carolina, celebrated after his graduation ceremony by taking pictures with a friend. When he tried forwarding those pics to his friend, he mistakenly “put a number in the wrong place”, according to his interview with Buzzfeed.

Instead of his friend receiving the picture, Columbia, South Carolina Real Estate agent, Roger Hawkins received the text. Now most would probably respond with “who dis”, “wrong number”, some other dry text, or simply ignore the mistake – but not Hawkins. Instead, he responded with his own encouraging selfie.

Along with the selfie, Hawkins also forwarded a link to some motivational speeches – now that’s dope. Campbell stated that he thought the whole thing was funny and how he appreciated the link: “The link was like, the icing on the cake. It’s a good link — it really is. This is really a good dude, that’s the vibe I get from him.” explains Hawkins.

The real icing on the cake however is that Campbell mistakenly published the phone number of the Carolina Real Estate Agent, and now he’s been getting text from all of his new fans on Twitter – and he’s been responding!

He’s also been taking the time to send motivational messages to other graduates.

As far has keeping in contact with Campbell, Hawkins told Buzzfeed he is sure he will keep in touch, “How could you not, you know?” he said. “I would love to, like, see what he does.” Campbell went on to send a shout out to all of his new fans on Twitter, along with another encouraging sentiment: “Kindness is contagious.”

Today is Black Women’s Equal Pay Day – bet you didn’t know that. Today is a day where we recognize the huge wage gap black women experience in today’s workforce. For black women, to make the same amount of money as a man in 2016, a black woman would need to work ALL of 2016, PLUS seven extra months, which would be today, July 31, 2017. For every $1 a man makes, a black woman makes approximately $0.63.

IMG_3454Serena Williams, who has been a long time advocate of equal pay, wrote an essay for Fortune Magazine about why we need to continue to acknowledge this day.

I’d like to acknowledge the many realities black women face every day. To recognize that women of color have to work—on average—eight months longer to earn the same as their male counterparts do in one year. To bring attention to the fact that black women earn 17% less than their white female counterparts and that black women are paid 63% of the dollar men are paid. Even black women who have earned graduate degrees get paid less at every level. This is as true in inner cities as it is in Silicon Valley.

In her essay, Serena not only discusses the issues surrounding the disturbing pay gap for black women, she also talks about working on solutions, especially for women in Silicon Valley, where fields are grossly male dominated. Serena is working with companies like Survey Monkey to determine how she can “push the needle forward” that will open doors, not only for women – but for any group of people, no matter their skin color. Serena goes on to explain in her essay:

Unfair pay has prevailed for far too long with no consequence. Through decades of systematic oppression, black women have been conditioned to think they are less than. In many cases, these women are the heads of households. Single mothers. The issue isn’t just that black women hold lower-paying jobs. They earn less even in fields of technology, finance, entertainment, law, and medicine.

Celebrities and advocates around the internet are also supporting this day and Serena’s campaign by rocking “Phenomenal Woman” t-shirts. In recognition of this day, black women are asked to speak out and against the wage disparities happening here in the U.S. In the words of Serena and in the spirit of Auntie Maxine, Let’s reclaim our time, money and “Let’s get back those 37 cents.”

A total solar eclipse is scheduled to grace the atmosphere in August and millions of people around the world are planning to take part in this heavenly phenomenon. When the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, there will be almost three total minutes of total darkness in some sections of the United States. Scientists and astronomers have predicted that the best places in the U.S. to experience this rare occurrence is along a diagonal section from Oregon to South Carolina; more specifically, cities like St. Joseph, Missouri and Charleston, S.C. are being held as prime locations to visit during the eclipse.

As a Charleston resident, the thought of any additional traffic coming into the city is damn near frightening, but here are some things that can help you make it through this spectacular, once (or twice) in-a-lifetime event:

WHY IS THIS ECLIPSE SO SPECIAL

They call this event “Path of Totality” and it is said that we are in for an unforgettable experience! This phenomenon is special because this is a continent-wide solar eclipse, the first to be visible since 1776. It is also the first to cross the entire continent of North American in 99 years. As the moon’s shadow is cast across the earth, we have been told that this is a “hauntingly beautiful” site and is symbolic of “great change” – some of us can use some great change in our lives, right! Once the moon totally envelops the sun, it will last only a few minutes, we must be prepared or we will miss it! The good news is another total solar eclipse will darken the skies above Mexico and Texas, up through the Midwest and northeastern U.S in the year 2024!

According to NASA:

“Aug. 21, 2017, may beone of the worst traffic days in national history, some NASA representatives predict. Although about 12 million people live within the narrow band of totality, approximately 25 million reside within a day’s drive of it, and the agency has estimated that the population inside the path of totality may double on the day of the eclipse.”

So How to Plan: (1) Hotels along the eclipse’s path have been booked for months (or years) so if you are traveling, there may be some issues with last minute planning (2) if you plan to go out to view the eclipse be aware of your proximity to food, water, parking, and facilities. (3) even traveling short distances around town will be hectic on this day

SCHOOLS ARE CLOSED

City officials have decided on August 21st schools will be closed for safety reasons. The city will experience total darkness for approximately 2.5 minutes, and for the safety of every child, parents are being asked to keep their children home on this day. The good news is this will alleviate some of the already horrible traffic issues in Charleston, SC and surrounding areas.
