As old hip-hop heads continue to sound like bitter old guys trying to flex on a new crop of hip-hop all stars, the youngsters are continuing to prove to the world that they are about the business of rap and enterprise. Hip-hop pundits, time and again have proclaimed that many of these rappers would be one-hit-wonders, but these young, future moguls are determined to leave their footprint in the world of hip-hop and prove the naysayers wrong.

Lil Yachty has taken much of the heat this past year from dj’s, rappers, and bloggers who have tried to pin him as the head of the “mumble rappers”, but Yachty continues to press on and has landed a deal with a well-known fashion brand. On Saturday, the 19-year-old rapper announced via his Instagram that he would be joining the Nautica Team as Creative Designer for their Capsule Collection. Check your bank accounts, you may have some money headed your way soon. On Tuesday, United States regulators fined Transunion and Equifax over $23.5 million in fines and restitution for deceiving customers who purchased credit score information. If you have ever purchased your credit score, you may have noticed that they may inform you that the fee to receive your score will cost you $6.00, however once you process your infomation on their website, you may have ended up with a $20-$30 charge, or some sort of monthly fee for their services. In some cases, many consumers thought they were purchasing their credit scores for $1.00, but ended up with a yearly service costing them $200 or more.

Transunion has to return almost $14 million to consumers and pay over $3 million in fines. Equifax must pay customers $3.8 million in restitution and pay $2.5 in fines, and so far Experian has not been fined. After an investigation by the U.S. Consumer Protection Financial Bureau, they discovered this bait-and-switch type tactic had been going on from July 2011 until March 2014.

To resolve any future issues, both companies are now required to change their marketing practices, which include:

  1. Getting a customer’s consent before enrolling them in additional services
  2. Getting consent for services where fees kick-in after a free-trial period
  3. Making it easier for consumers to cancel services they do not want

TransUnion representative David Blumberg and Equifax spokeswoman Ines Gutzmer stand with their companies and issued this statement: “their respective companies believe they have complied with applicable laws, and are committed to better educating consumers about their credit.”

Neither company has admitted or denied any wrongdoing.

If you were to look him up on Forbes where they rate billionaires across the world, the section that asks “Source of Wealth”, Robert Smith’s source is stated as, “private equity, Self Made.” Recently, this self-made billionaire was named one of the richest people in the world; tech investor Robert Smith is like our cyber version of Nebuchadnezzar. Described as quiet and lowkey, Smith makes big waves in the tech industry, simultaneously becoming a tycoon and philanthropist.

This billionaire is now doing something amazing to help the people of Nigeria. He has pledged to pay for the education of 24 girls from the Chibok region of Nigeria, most of whom escaped from Boko Haram. The Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President says the scholarships will help the young girls after the trauma they have suffered.

According to Garba Shehu:

“the girls will be admitted through negotiation at the prestigious American University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola, with the American billionaire footing the entire bill of the girls’ tuition, accommodation, feeding and other related expenses. It costs anywhere from $5,000 to $11,000 a year to educate a student at the school which is owned by wealthy frontline Nigerian politician and businessman Atiku Abubakar. Smith has offered to pay for the education of the 21 released through negotiations and is offering to take responsibility for all the others who will hopefully be eventually set free.”

A new law was officially enacted on Sunday in Illinois to aid in the epidemic of domestic violence. The law us using hair stylists, barbers, cosmetologists, estheticians, hair braiders, and nail techs to use their trusted relationships with clients in order to prevent domestic abuse.

The law will require those that work in these fields to receive one hour of mandated abuse-prevention training, which will be a required part of the licensing process. However, it is important to note that the law does not require them to report any violence, and it shelters them from any liability. The training will simply provide these professionals with information about any local help and resources they can share with their clients. This is the first of its kind in the United States.

According to Vi Nelson, spokesperson for Cosmetologists Chicago, she believes that hairstylists may be the first line of defense when noticing signs of abuse, she says:

“Abusers tend to try to find places where it could be an accident or it’s not has visible. They may hit them in the back of the head, and there’s a bruise or a bump. The hairdresser is touching you and can see things that cannot be visible to the casual observer.”

Because some stylists develop lifelong relationships with clients, know many of their personal trials and tribulations because of these relationships, beauty salons for many people are considered a safe environment where many people open up.

State Senator Bill Cunningham was involved in making sure this law was passed because his wife , a former hair stylist, had customers who frequently shared incidents of domestic violence. Cunningham stated, “She had a difficult time dealing with these issues when they came up. She wasn’t sure what to tell her clients.”

We should note, this new law will not make a hair stylist a therapist; it simply is a way of connecting victims to the services needed for them to get help. The law was drafted with the help of Cosmetologists Chicago, who assisted in writing the law so that it did not require beauty professionals to become involved or report violence unless they felt obligated to do so.

If successful, this law could go on to be pushed to many other states. Some salon owners are already helping in the fight against domestic violence by placing business cards and resource information for anti-domestic violence groups within their salon.
