Donald Trump

So it happened. No this is not a drill, no this is not a test, this is real life! What most of us took as a joke really happened. Donald Trump is now the President of the United States; OK, so now what? Despite your personal feelings regarding our new Commander in Chief, the reality is NOW is the time to prepare for the unpredictable events that may come within the next four years. As African Americans and people of color, as a segment of the population we understand that many of the Trump policies and platform may not align to the best interest of our communities. A Trump presidency may even put a financial, educational, and cultural strain on our communities; however, none of this remains to be seen for right now.

Right now, our culture is suffering from some sort of weird paranoia that stems from the disappointment of electing a racist egomaniac. However, let’s just get some of our comrades to complete their five stages of grief first (denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance); and after that’s over, let’s mobilize!

Once we have arrived at acceptance. There are many things in our control that we can do to prepare! Many people are on social media saying that this election may have been the best thing for the black community – claiming that this may motivate many to do the things they need to do to get our of being complacent. Others say, if the election of a BLACK PRESIDENT couldn’t motivate black people, then one can’t be sure that folks are going to get motivated now. However, as a hopeless, glass-half-full lover of my people – despite the monkey wrench that has been thrown our way – still we rise!

Here are some tangible things we can do to prepare ourselves, families and communities to get through, at least the next four years:

Be Proactive!

Don’t let these results get your down, we still have battles to fight. There is an attack right now against our immigrant sisters and brothers and now is not the time to become silent simply because we lost a fight. With immigration being the hot-button issue right now, we must remain vocal and active within our communities. We must hold our locally elected officials accountable – and that means (hold it on their asses)! Locally, this is where we hold the most power and where we can make a difference.

Stay Informed!

Now this one is a tough one. Even Peter Wehner, a Republican who served on the White House staffs of Reagan, Bush, and Bush #2 said,“I don’t think he knows what his presidency is going to look like, either in terms of policy or in terms of style or attitude or temperament. There’s never been a president in modern history, or maybe in American history, where trying to predict how his presidency will unfold is so unknowable.” With that said, one just doesn’t know what direction The Donald will go – including The Donald! However, what we are smart to assume is that Trump will take many actions that are sure to benefit the rich – simply because this is what he knows best. We have to pay attention to what laws are passed, what actions taken by Obama have been reversed, and what discussions are underway on the Senate and House floors. If we stay informed about what is being done we can maneuver in other ways that help us benefit from these changes. As a community, many people have a tendency of finding out about issues after they have already been decided; this behavior cannot happen under a Trump presidency.

Limit Your Exposure to News Organizations – They Will Make You Paranoid!

It’s already started! Here are the headlines:

“The Mike Pence (Donald Trump) Assault On LGBTQ Equality Is Already Underway”

“Is Donald Trump already walking away from campaign promises?”

“Donald Trump Protester Shot During March in Oregon”

Now, I know this blog is telling you to Stay Informed; BUT as consumers of information we have to start knowing the difference between viable information and click bait. Click bait leaves consumers of news drained, paranoid, excited, anxious, mad, angry, worried (insert adjective here). Click bait may not even provide accurate or viable information, it is simply used by news organizations (both legit and sketchy) to get readers to read/view their stories. Don’t fall for the hype – this is the fastest way to get people unfocused and the fastest way to get people to make emotional decisions.

Do You!

Although you have those that claim nothing happened, especially for black people during the Obama administration – guess what… many of us have done/achieved some great things within the last eight years! Within eight years, we have seen African Americans and people of color open businesses, become CEOs and Presidents of companies, and simply excel at alarming rates! We have seen more artists going platinum without a deal, writers hit the best sellers list without ever having written books before, and more young black politicians than you can shake a stick at! And none of these achievements had anything to do with a President of the U.S.

With that said, one of the most important aspects of excelling under a Trump Presidency is to continue on this path. This isn’t the first time in American history where people of color have been represented by a President who may not care about their interest, and we have still been able to rise above all the madness.

If you have gotten to work – now is the time. If you don’t know what to do, start surrounding yourself with people who are doing something! It’s a new day, new opportunities are ahead of us – let’s get it!

Imagine for a second, its 2008 and a man who isn’t so well-known, a man of color named Barack Hussein Obama was running for President of the United States of America. Now imagine, this man of color was able to draw thousands of people of color to his campaign rallies by being a voice of their most inner thoughts – thoughts of hate. Imagine if Barack Hussein Obama said things like, “white people are violent mass murders” or “white people have the highest percentage of child molesters and abusers” or “we need to build a wall on the border of Canada that would prevent more dangerous mass murdering, child molesters into the United States”. Also, imagine thousands of people of color at a Barack campaign rally and out of nowhere appears some white protesters. These white protesters are highly offended at the messages that Obama had been spewing and they have decided to exercise their Right to Protest during one of his rallies. Now – imagine if people of color got so angry at these protesters , they began to physically attack them at every rally. Imagine if you will, people of color, grabbing, punching, spitting on white protesters and calling them cunts and crackers. Imagine the police, who are also people of color, doing NOTHING to protect these white protesters from these violent people of color. Imagine, black police officers being so focused on the white protesters, that they blindly ignore the physical assaults right before their eyes, coming from the Blacks/Hispanics who attend the Obama rallies.

Can you imagine the backlash! Can you imagine how the news would make certain to highlight the continued violence the blacks/hispanics were displaying? Can you imagine the names that blacks/Hispanics would be called – niggers, animals, thugs? Can you imagine the heightened security, possibly even calling out the National Guard to protect the innocent white protesters? This scenario can go on for days. The point of this was to really sit back and think about how Trump is getting away what the most blatant forms of White Privilege and so are his violent protesters.

As Americans, Freedom of Assembly/Freedom of Association/Right to Protest is upheld by the Constitution of the United States. See The First Amendment, which states, “the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances’; also don’t forget this First amendment also grants our ‘Freedom of Speech’. It seems pathetically ironic how the types of people who can be seen assembling at these Trump rallies to listen to his hate speeches are the same people who constantly defend his rhetoric with that of ‘Freedom of Speech’. However, these same Trump supporters want to suppress the Freedom of Speech of those who don’t agree with Trump. But to disagree with protesters is one thing – to ATTACK AND ASSAULT them is taking this Trump fuckery to a whole new level.

In February 2016, while a attending a Hillary Clinton rally, a protester jumped up right beside me and started yelling at Hillary during her Town Hall Meeting here in Charleston, SC at Royal Baptist Life Center. He kept calling a liar and screamed how she had like about Benghazi. Check out how removing the protester from the premises was handled:

Benghazi Protester removed at Hillary Rally

Simple, barely touching the man – the usher simply walked him out. Besides a few “shut-ups” from the crowd, nothing major.

Now Check out how they handle protesters at a Donald Trump Rally:
Silent Protesting Teen Girl- Assaulted by Thugs at Donald Trump rally

Punk Spits on non-violent Protester

Thug Sucker punches Non violent Protester

The problem here is that the media, the police and other politicians do not seem to be bothered by this surge of violence at all. Politicians continue to endorse Trump and the people hired to protect and serve, seem to only want to protect and serve anyone who isn’t black. It’s only a matter of time before this escalates and protesters, who have every right to protest, begin to bust back.

The mayor of North Charleston, Mayor Keith Summey plans on announcing his endorsement for Donald Trump today. Keith Summey recently won a heated and controversial mayoral election. During the election, citizens had even demanded that he step down as mayor after video of Walter Scott was released to the public showing North Charleston Police officer Michael Slager, shooting Scott in the back. Citizens were concerned had it not been for the video evidence, city officials and police would have attempted to cover-up the killing. Summey had a challenging year in the City of North Charleston fighting accusations of racism, nepotism, and misappropriation of city funds; however, the people of North Charleston re-elected the mayor who is now the longest sitting mayor in South Carolina.

Today, Mayor Keith Summey has gotten past most of this controversy, and according to the Post & Courier, the mayor will be endorsing Donald Trump for President in Saturday’s Republican primary. Summey will be meeting with Trump this afternoon to confirm his support.

What makes this interesting is that the mayor of a city that is predominately people of color could possibly endorse someone who has made blatantly racists and outlandish statements about Blacks and Hispanics. According to the U.S. Census, the city of North Charleston has a black population of 47.2% and a hispanic population of 10.9%, making this city predominately people of color. Yet, the mayor of this city is slated to endorse a presidential candidate who has made the following statements:

  1. Trump has blamed Blacks and Hispanics for violent crime in the U.S. Trump said: “Sadly, the overwhelming amount of violent crime in our major cities is committed by blacks and hispanics-a tough subject-must be discussed.”— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 5, 2013
  2. He has called Latinos criminals and rapists
  3. He claims that Mexico is sending criminals to the US on purpose.
  4. After his followers beat up a hispanic man at a rally, Trump stated they were just “passionate”

Feel free to check out the rest of some of Mr. Trump’s most outlandish statements here.

Even Keith Summey’s son doesn’t agree with his endorsement according to this comment left in the Post & Courier’s Facebook Page:

summeyson

With the city of North Charleston being the third largest city in the state, the Mayor’s support of Trump is a major win for the Trump candidacy. Summey can have a huge influence over his voters who will give Trump the votes he will need to win in the state of S.C.

South Carolina’s governor, Nikki Haley even took a jab at Donald Trump in her State of the State Address. In her speech, she said:

“During anxious times, it can be tempting to follow the siren call of the angriest voices,” Haley said from the governor’s residence in Columbia. “We must resist that temptation. No one who is willing to work hard, abide by our laws, and love our traditions should ever feel unwelcome in this country.”

Though, she didn’t mention Trump by name, it was clear that she would not be endorsing him.

With this being said Mayor Summey – what the hell are you thinking? As we watched you sing church hymns with the Royal Baptist Church Men’s choir during your swearing in, you appeared as if you were trying to unite your city – or was that just an act (shucking & jiving). Mr. Mayor, an endorsement for Trump is a clear sign to the majority of your tax-paying residents that you share the same sentiments as Donald Trump. An endorsement for Trump means that it is very possible that if you share those sentiments, then your city’s police officers also share the same views when it comes to Blacks and Latinos in the city of North Charleston. So the next time a Black or Latino gets pulled over in the city of North Charleston, should we expect that our mayor and his employees will automatically assume that we are criminals? Should people of color in North Charleston, S.C. be concerned about your ideas, your values and your views of people of color? As a tax-payer and resident of North Charleston, I am highly disappointed that you have made such a poor choice. Any one who had a hand in re-electing you made a huge mistake – glad you didn’t get my vote.
