Turning Horror Into Hope

Across the country we are seeing women and more people of color who are taking the leap, and jumping into the political deep sea. Most recently, Lucy McBath has decided to get her feet wet, and is running for U.S. Congress for the state of Georgia’s 6th Congressional district. McBath’s mission is to fight for the legacy of her son, Jordan Davis, and fight for national gun reform.

McBath is a national spokesperson for Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense for America. Most importantly, she’s a mother and a two-time breast cancer survivor – so if anyone is a fighter, it’s definitely Lucy McBath. However, she is best known as the mother of Jordan Davis.

She described Jordan and fun, active and a kid who wanted to know about everything. If you remember, 17 year-old Jordan was murdered by a white man, because he refused to turn down the music in a vehicle.

In an interview with Now This Politics, McBath says she was advised by another woman to wait and not run for Congress. McBath responded, “Ithink you just get to a point where you stop waiting for someone else to do it, and say ‘why not me?

As the daughter of two civil rights era activists who marched alongside her parents during this era, McBath says she was living a somewhat normal life, until the senseless murder of her son. She says the murder of Jordan sparked something that was always there, but had not been sparked in some time.

McBath was considered the dark horse, she came into the race last, didn’t have all of the resources in comparison to the other candidates, and was the only minority female running. Despite it all, she was able to clench the nomination and is now in the running to take her seat on the House floor. In the Now This interview, McBath says that black woman have been the backbone of this country and “our experiences give great credibility to what’s possible for young women and little girls.”

“You feel for her as a mother,” said Cheryl Brown, 60, in a New York Times interview. “Years before meeting Ms. McBath, Brown kept a Jet Magazine cover featuring Jordan Davis at her Atlanta-area home. The cover read, “Is Your Child Next?,” and it resonated with Ms. Brown because she, too, fears her black son could fall victim to racist violence.

Lucy McBath’s heart is definitely in her campaign, and in her purpose. Let’s hope she wins in the upcoming Georgia election, and we pray that through her, Jordan Davis’ legacy will continue.

“Don’t Sell Your House”

“Don’t sell you house”, is what Mayor Keisha Bottoms urged residents still living in Atlanta’s west side neigborhoods. These historic districts are now considered a hot spot for hungry developers, and some of Atlanta’s longtime residents are being put under extrememly intense pressure to sell. Mayor Bottoms went on a local media tour urging residents to fight against gentrification, and to avoid selling their homes.

As a resident of Charleston, S.C. , i envy these residents for having such a caring Mayor; a mayor willing to educate her constituents about the potential value of their property, and the sneaky, under-handed tactics real estate dealers make to convince older, less knowledgeable residents to sell their properties. Imagine if hundreds of black families in Charleston, S.C. and surrounding counties had a Mayor like Keisha Bottoms. Imagine if had a mayor who took the time and educated residents about the plans that were going on in our city ten to twenty years ago. Imagine if we had mayors that cared more about residents, instead of Mayors who have all decided to open real estate companies of their own due to the lowcouty’s booming real estate market. All Charleston residents can do is imagine; digress.

In September, Mayor Bottoms visited two local radio stations in Atlanta to help spread the message. In one interview, Mayor Bottoms stated, “If your mother, or your grandmother owns a house in the west side of town, do not sell it! Don’t sell your house!”

So why is there such an urgency for the Mayor to warn Atlanta residents about selling their property, some of which have been in these families for generations? It’s because of what is currently happening in the A-T-L. Just when you thought Atlanta couldn’t possibly grow any larger, right? Not true at all, right now on perimeter of Atlanta’s west side, they have built a billion dollar sports stadium, and as interest increases in real estate nearby the stadium, interest also increases for the modest, black neighborhoods that surround this area.

Many of the older residents in Atlanta’s west side have become completely fed up with annoying investors and real estate developers. Some have described the offers investors are bringing as, “being robbed without a gun.” Older residents complain about feeling confused, and not really knowing who to trust when it comes to concerns about their property. Investors also have tried the old tactic of creating a false sense of urgency in order to convence homeowners to sell now. Other investors have simply been bold, telling homeowners to name their price, knowing these residents are not knowledgeable about the potential value of these homes.

Mayor Bottoms deserves a huge shout out for educating and getting the word out about why residents should not sell their homes. Too bad the residents in Charleston, S.C. didn’t have the same type of care given to them. Kudos to her!

As if the Mayor of Atlanta hasn’t been busy enought protecting her constituents’ properties, she also recently signed a bill which would rename three of Atlanta’s confederate street names. This lady is truly on fire!

Lyft Is Out Here Helping Creators Thrive

Lyft is out here doing great things to support the creative culture in Atlanta. The company obviously has an understanding of who their ideal driver is, what they do, and the goals of many of their drivers in the Atlanta area. The ridesharing organization decided they would open a music recording studio for its Atlanta drivers, inside their main office off of Howell Mill Road in northwest Atlanta.

Sam Bond, General Manager of Lyft in the Southeast, told The Atlanta Journal Constitution, that there are a lot of artists within the driver community in Atlanta who are earning extra money as Lyft drivers to pay for studio time. The team over at Lyft started working on ideas of how they could best help some of their drivers. The Atlanta team found out that Lyft in Detroit started renting out studio time for their drivers; the southeast team decided to “one-up” the Detroit location.

Lyft Atlanta decided to open the first, dedicated recording studio that would be free for drivers to use. The studio is pretty simple; they installed a microphone and an iPad in a soundproof room. The company said that in about a month, about 20 of their drivers have put the Lyft studio to good use.

Recently, Lyft decided to contact drivers to perform at the official studio launch party and they received over 100 demos; most of which were hip hop artists. At the Lyft launch party, Yung Joc performed along with a few of the selected Lyft drivers that submitted demos.

Lyft has assured drivers that even though they record music in Lyft production studios, they will own all of their music and content. Sam Bond stated that, “this is for artists, who in many cases, need a shot,” Bond went on to say, “we don’t see this ending on the ground here in Atlanta.

Other Lyft locations across the country are now looking into similar models for their cities. This is a great example of companies who hear, understand, and are concerned with the lives of their employees – outside of work; and are here to assist them with their dreams. Great job Lyft!

Killer Nike never lied! During the#STANDWITHATLANTArally for Keisha Lance Bottoms, he gave kudos to the city of Atlanta for not being gentrified like so many cities around the country. In Keisha Bottoms’ effort to become the next Mayor of Atlanta, Killer Mike made an inspiring speech about how her and people like her are the heart of Atlanta, a product of Atlanta, and how the city needs to back her and push their best products forward!

“When you land in Atlanta, you see anall black crew working. when you check in a hotel, you see black boys grabbing your bags. And if you never traveled anywhere you don’t see that every where. When you got the 3rd most corporations than any city in the united states and you a black city that means something. That’s not Detroit, that’s not Compton, that’s not Watts, that’s not rebuilding or gentrified like all the rest. That means you stayed your place and you made it! Then you take the product of what made, and how dare you put her up against someone else and say prove yourself. She’s a product of Collier Heights, she’s a product of Frederick Douglas, a product of FAMU. You can’t keep going on TV and say “Trump, treat us right”, if you don’t put your best products forward!

It’s 2017 and the amount that kids have to pay to attend colleges are beyond out of control. One book could cost a student $100-$300. The average cost of tuition at a private college in the United States in 2016/2017 was approximately $33,480; $9,650 for a student at a public college within their resident state, and $24,930 for a child attending an out-of-state public college – we won’t even get into the debate of how this debt will affect students in years to come; let’s save that conversation for another day.

Today the students of Spelman and Morehouse are taking a stand in a fight to help their fellow students. These young men and women are taking part in a hunger strike to speak out against the unfair policies at their college. Students have been trying to help out other students who are suffering from hunger. The idea is to transfer funds, or use their swipes, from their meal plans to other classmates who cannot afford to buy meals. Apparently, Aramark wants to fine students who are sharing their food swipes with other hungry kids.

You all remember, think back in the day when you were in college. If you were at USC like I was, you purchased a meal plan – well, your parents purchased a meal plan. You had a specific amount allocated for breakfast, lunch and dinner; the funds were all held on your student I.D. card. Sometimes you used it, sometimes you didn’t. If you didn’t use all of it, you may have purchased a snack for your home girl or got some extra fries for your homeboy – not a big deal, right? We all did it! Well Aramark and Spelman want to punish kids for sharing their meal swipes. Some of these kids are choosing to allocate their entire meal for another student who may not have access to a meal plan. You would think this is a good thing, but since it takes money out of the pockets of big businesses and colleges, or course it’s a problem.

In an interview with the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Joi Stewart, a sophomore at Spelman told the local paper that approximately “1500 students on campus are at risk of being food insecure.” Joi went on to explain, “I’m okay with foregoing a meal so that my Spelman sister who hasn’t eaten in two days can eat.” Let’s make this clear — NO ONE SHOULD BE PUNISHED FOR SHARING THEIR FOOD WITH HUNGRY PEOPLE!

Aramark is the company that provides many schools around the country with these university food plans and food. ** (Aramark is also the same company that provides food to over 500 correctional facilities in the U.S. – They have been accused of providing inmates with expired food and food that contains maggots).

Since a few dozen students started this hunger strike, they have gained momentum and national attention. Aramark has said that college officials will need to come to them if they are needing these types of changes in meal plans; the company said it is possible to create a program where students can donate funds to other students.

This story has many of us simply pissed off. The average cost to attend Spelman in 2016/2017 is $46,000 regardless of their residency – this is for ONE year! Why would a student who is forced to pay this exorbitant fee for education be at school starving – not eating for days at at time? This doesn’t even make sense. These schools have become low-key corporations focused on their bottom line, and not the well-being of their customers aka students.

No student should be attending school and allowed to go days without being able to eat. No student should be punished for trying to help another student. Education is important, but the system is BROKEN. Also, this is not the time to start a debate about HBCU vs PWI because student athletes at Charleston Southern University have also protested regarding the lack of food on campus. This is not a black university/white university problem, this is a systematic issue where businesses/colleges have no problem collecting fees for books, classes and made-up costs, but don’t care enough to assure that these children get a decent meal three times a day.

As grown as a college kid may behave, they are still kids; they are broke – and these colleges and universities should be held to a higher standard. Many will ask, “where are their parents” not even realizing that many of these students are on their own, many don’t have a place to go for Thanksgiving or Christmas. But let’s remember, many of these kids can’t even attend a class without making sure that their $46,000 fees have been applied – so if a school has no problem collecting $46,000 from a kid, then they should have no problem making sure that kid eats – everyday.
