New Law may require Club Owners to become the New Police Force for the sidewalks and City Streets of Charleston, SC?

We all have seen it! You’re on King Street at about 1:45 am, the streets are packed with College Kids /Tourists/Locals, etc. who have been drinking all night! They are stumbling out of the clubs and through the streets and they are loud and sometimes, things can get out of hand. Well the Mayor and Police Chief feel like they have a solution, and it involves the Club Owners becoming the New Police Squad.

Its called “The Late Night Entertainment Establishment Ordinance”. In today’s Post and Courier, there’s an article written by Schuyler Kropf that talks about a new city ordinance being proposed that would require bar owners to provide security, not only inside the club and on club property, but also on the sidewalks and locations near their clubs. They would also have to make sure parking lots are cleared 30 minutes after closing AND doors/windows where music is played have to be shut and sealed by 11pm. Its called the “Late Night Entertainment Establishment Ordinance” and is backed by the mayor and police chief.

Police Chief Mullen says he’s concerned about the constant “unruly” behavior occurring in downtown, mainly in our tourist areas. If you are a club owner and you fail to comply with their requirements, you are subject to court appearances, risking the loss of your business licenses and permits

Do Club owners have the right to tell people to go home, or get off the sidewalks of Charleston? Isnt this the job of the Police?
