From Moncks Corner to Mainstream TV

Once again, Charlemagne tha god continues to make his hometown of Moncks Corner, South Carolina proud. From inside the walls of Z-93 in Charleston, S.C. and being ‘fired from every radio station he’s worked at’, as he likes to proudly proclaim; Charlemagne has made a permanent mark in the entertainment industry. As is being the co-host of one of the country’s biggest morning show’s, The Breakfast Club, isn’t enough; Charlemagne tha god has managed to take his personal brand even bigger. He just inked a deal with HBO.

This week HBO announced that they’ve ordered a series called The Grey Area with Charlemagne tha god. This is an interview series, that will consist of four, hour-long specials that are set to start late 2018. Charlemagne is tapped as the executive producer of the series alongside Karen Kinney. As of right now, there’s no word on who will be interviewed, or the subject matter, but we can only guess from the ‘in your face‘ type of commentary we hear daily on The Breakfast Club, Charlemagne is probably ready to tackle the tough subjects.

In a recent interview, Charlemagne is thankful for his new job, and this new television journey:

“I feel extremely blessed to be able to announce my official partnership with HBO on a new conversation series which will provide a safe space for ‘unsafe’ people to curate their stories and control their own narratives,” said Charlamagne. “The reality is, when it comes to people’s stories, it’s not black or white, it’s always an area that’s a shade of gray and that’s usually where the lies end and the truth begins, and this show will give those people an opportunity to share their truth. Thank you to my new television home, HBO and all praise is due to God.”

There has been a downward spiraling debate ever since Friday when The Breakfast Club interviewed comedian, Lil Duval. Today, members of the Transgender community got to express their outrage directly at one of the members of The Breakfast Club, Charlemagne Tha God, during his Politican appearance with MSNBC in Pasedena, CA. Charlemagne was at Politicon to talk hip-hop and politics on the Democracy Village stage, when the panel endured protests by women screaming at the morning show host that, “Trans Lives Matter”. Check out this clip below:

Trans women and supporters across the internet have vowed to boycott The Breakfast Club because of the comments made by comedian, Lil Duval on Friday. Lil Duval was asked about being fooled into having sex with someone who did not reveal the fact that they were once a man. In the interview Lil Duval stated, “this might sound messed but, but i don’t care – she dying.” Charlemagne then responded, “no, that’s a hate crime, you can’t do that.” Though, The Breakfast Club did not condone violence against transgender people, for many, they morning show did not take a serious-enough stand against what Lil Duval had said. Check out parts 1 and 2 of the interview below.

Again, what we did see is that The Breakfast Club, at no time during this interview, condoned violence against transgender people. What we also saw however, was that the stance they chose when it was time to speak up against what Lil Duval said, was a weak one. We saw a conversation about the possibility of someone being murdered, mixed with giggles and jokes – this is when the laughs should have ceased. Had this been an interview with Sean Hannity where guests were jokingly mocking the killing of a black person, no one would think this was funny.

Right now many are calling for the firing of the Breakfast Club, they are asking people to call iHeartMedia, MTV, and Revolt in protest of the morning show. Now, many believe some of this is tied to the hatred many listeners have for the outspoken, gritty cohost, Charlemagne Tha God, but is firing the cast asking too much? Are they going too far? It depends on your interpretation of the interview and if you believe The Breakfast Club really supports the murder of transgender people.

Right now, we support the transgender community and their issues with the Breakfast club, and in the meanwhile we will wait to see if the Breakfast Club gives themselves the Donkey of the Day. During these times, we have to remember to respect everyone and their differences, and when we don’t, we will face the consequences.

While most of us have never heard of Tomi Lahren, the talk show host took some time to scold Beyonce and her half-time performance. We all know that when it comes to the Black Lives Matter movement, many of our Caucasian cohorts hate the movement and what it stands for. Yes, they hate that black people are expressing the fact that black lives really do matter, police brutality is wrong, and black people deserve a trial by a jury of their peers and they do not deserve to be gunned down in the street by a trigger-happy police officer.

The following morning, after Lahren’s dramatic rant, Charlemagne gave Tomi “Donkey of the Day” during his morning show on The Breakfast Club. Tomi received this title because the rhetoric many people are using against Beyonce’s performance was that she is honoring the Black Panthers – which they have chosen to call a terrorist group. In 2016 this type of rhetoric should not work, but of course, people are falling for it and are currently gathering at an Anti-Beyonce rally on today in protest of this performance.

Most of us understand the Black Panther Party was started as a defense against the thousands of murders of black people here in America. The movement was not built to use violence; however, violence would be used if it was necessary. The government used the same tactics against the Panther party that they used against Martin Luther King in order to demonize their efforts. We all know that Hoover along with the F.B.I. took extreme and illegal measures to discredit King (Read This NY Times Article). These same lynch-men used whatever measures necessary to discredit, vilify and destroy the Black Panther Movement (Read This Atlanta Black Star Article).

Unfortunately, people like Tomi Lahren are using the same propaganda in 2016 that the government tried to use against King and the Panthers in the sixties. Calling them a terrorists group, saying that they are out to kill the police, and many other factors that are simply not accurate are being used today to sway simple people who are too lazy to study the history of the civil rights movement for themselves.

Last week Charlemagne The God and Tomi Lahren went toe-to-toe in a discussion about Beyonce’s Superbowl performance, the Panther Party and other topics. While Tomi led and ended with the only civil rights leader they know anything about- Martin Luther King and the only subject that they feel safe talking about “nonviolence”. Charlemagne attempted to get her to understand that the Bey’s performance was not ANTI-POLICE it was against POLICE BRUTALITY. The dialogue was one of those discussions that people say Americans need to have more often, however it was obvious that Lahren was not letting up against her original rant, and Charlemagne was never going to cosign anything she said. Let’s just say they agreed to disagree. Check out the full interview below.

You have to go and read the New York Times article, about South Carolina’s own, Monks Corner born and bread, Charleston 843 radio DJ , Charlemagne tha God. There are so many things I love about this article, and I’ve said many times that I love how Charlemagne refuses to kiss “arses” when doing these interviews. What I especially love is how, no matter how big he gets, he always reps where he’s from!

Paul Ricci, the Senior Vice President for Programming and Development for MTV, said this about Charlemagne, “He’s a unique, honest, authentic individual and they don’t come around that often.”

So congrats to him and good luck with the new show on MTV, all of SC will be watching!
